TIR: Fresh Legs

So the story picks back up when the active van arrives at the transition point. At that point, I’ve only run 1 mile, ate some food, took a nap; I’m having a great time. I switched from the rest van to the active van as Ed took off running his leg and we headed toward the next transition point. This is where I realized that it was going to be challenging to keep up with everything logistically. One challenge was figuring out where to go as we couldn’t just follow the course because on this leg it took a path over some railroad tracks and then a foot bridge across a creek. With it being a 2.5 mile leg, that only gave us 15 minutes to be in place and ready. Did I mention these guys were really fast? Anyway, we made it to the foot bridge and weren’t confident we’d make it to the transition, so we kicked Matt out half a mile early and told him to “warm up” the rest of the way. In the end we made it in time, barely. Most of the legs were about 5 miles, so our usual strategy was to let the guy who just ran cool down for about 5 minutes. Then catch the current runner half way and give him some water. And then to the transition point to let the next guy warm up. And then repeat. All of that was really non-stop action. There was definitely no resting in the active van.

I was the last one to run a leg and while Noel was running leg 9, Matt started crunching some numbers. Remember this is a bunch of engineers. It turns out that everyone was running much faster than their predicted “conservative” 10 K pace and by his calculations we had a chance of breaking 24 hours. Everyone was quick to point out that we were just doing it for fun but we’re also all pretty competitive. My first leg was started in Flatonia. I thought Flatonia sounded like a nice place to start; better than Hillonia. It actually was a nice little town. The fire department had set up some showers using PVC pipe and tarps behind the theater which everyone except me got to enjoy. But I was focused on my run, leg 10 which was 6.1 miles, just short of a 10K. It was about 6:30 PM by then so I was also the first one to have to wear the night gear. That included a headlamp, a reflective belt, and a clip-on blinking bike light. It was still pretty light out, though, so I didn’t have to use the headlamp. I was concerned about what pace to run since I had no idea what it would be like to run another 10K six hours later. My “conservative” 10K pace was an 8:30 min/mile. I knew I could do all of my miles at that pace because it would be my fast marathon pace, but I wasn’t sure what would happen if I ran faster.

Noel came running in and slapped the bracelet which was used as the relay “baton” on me. No really, it was a slap bracelet. Yes admit it, you remember it from the 1980’s. Anyway, I took off running and felt really good. Amazingly good from what my GPS watch was telling me since my pace was wicked fast. Then I realized that I hadn’t reset my watch from the Prologue and it was averaging in that 7 minute mile. After I fixed that my pace actually made sense, and was still good. The leg was somewhat scenic, some small rolling hills through the Texas countryside. About half way there was a sign for the town of Praha (which is the Czech spelling of Prague) which made me smile since I’ve been there (both in the Czech Republic and in Nebraska). The team was also there to give me Gatorade to wash down my Gu packet. I felt really good but that doesn’t mean I looked good. I’ve never had a picture of myself running look flattering and I wasn’t going to share this, but since you are still reading… here you go (thanks Rich). But then up ahead I spotted my mark. My first roadkill. No not an armadillo. Roadkill is what it was called when you passed someone or when someone passed you. It was different from other races I’ve run since there was the staggered start due to the diversity of the teams. So it was cool to be able to see someone up ahead and chase them down. Especially at night since everyone had a flashing red light on their back. Slowly I reeled him in and passed him. OK, so he was older than me. Much older, and running almost as fast as me, but I still passed him. Shortly after that some other guy roadkilled me and put me back in my place which was really running to push myself. The 6 miles flew by and before I knew it I was at the transition. It also caught our next runner off guard since I was more than a little early. Luckily he was ready. It was just getting dark when I finished and by the time I cooled down it was dark. I hopped in the rest van and off we went to the next rest stop. Just enough time to try to down some food (which mostly consisted of PB&J, Powerbars, and Cliff bars) and try to rehydrate.

Leg 1 complete. Distance: 6.09 miles. Time: 47:32. Pace 7:48.

Can I keep up this pace for 16 more miles? Stay tuned…

Let’s Play Tag

My friend Amy tagged me in a photo meme awhile back (okay, over a month ago!) and I am just now getting to my post. Here are the instructions:

Post the 7th picture in your 7th folder and tell about it.  Don’t cheat, just post what’s there.

So here goes:

img_0234

This picture of JR was taken May 9, 2004 – almost 5 years ago!! He looks so young!! Look at that silly old fashioned cell phone he’s talking on! :)

img_0235

I decided to go ahead and add the next photo in the folder for selfish reasons. It is one of my favorite pictures of myself – I know, weird favorite picture, but my hair looks so good & Red’s does, too!! :)

And then I saw this picture when I was searching for the one of JR in our editor (because it had the same file name) and decided to be totally random and add it, too!mothermary_olivia

This is Olivia at almost 1 year (late November 2006). We had the traveling statue of Mary in our home for a week, if I remember correctly. I’ll have to check with the parish office next time we take Livy to preschool and see if “Mother Mary” is still making the rounds. I had forgotten all about her!

Almost forgot to tag someone else – hopefully Roxy doesn’t have our site in an RSS reader (since I’m adding this last line after the initial post went up)!! What’s your 7th picture Roxy?

Violet Frances at 6 Months

Sweet little Violet Frances is already six months old – six months!! Time sure flies when you’re having fun! Violet has been such a wonderful addition and it’s hard to imagine the family without her. She is a really good baby – happy & content almost all the time. Seriously, every week someone asks me – is she always this pleasant? And I have to confess, yes, she is. God apparently did not think I could handle a fussy baby as I’ve never had one (of course, now that I say that, we’re in for it!). Although for the record, Molly didn’t really sleep through the night until she was a year old – that counts for difficulty, right? There was a rough patch a few weeks back, but on the whole, Violet has been a very good sleeper & eats like a champ. She delights in her sisters’ attention and they delight in her giggles. Violet doesn’t sit up yet, but as I’ve mentioned recently, she shocked us by crawling at 6 months and is on the go searching for treasure wherever it may be found – cracker crumbs, train tracks, toy dishes, baby dolls – leave it on the floor and it’s fair game! She has little use for baby toys when there are big girl toys in every direction. Like her sisters before her, Violet is an adoring fan of Red. She crawls to her and pulls her fur while Red lovingly lays still so Violet can get a good grip!

Violet shows her enthusiasm by squealing with delight & sticking out her tongue. So far, her sisters get the biggest squeals, then Red, and finally the sight of cereal in a bowl. She started rice cereal last week and took to it right away. She’s been acting very curious during mealtimes so I figured she would really like it. Olivia enjoyed feeding her the second time and now asks at every meal if she can feed Violet the baby cereal. I think we’ll add bananas for breakfast and then follow with the usual first foods that we can make at home and freeze in large batches (all types of squash, sweet potatoes, etc.). Keeps things cheap & easy that way.

Our beautiful baby has deep blue eyes like her sisters, but has her own look (Molly & Olivia didn’t look as much alike as babies as they do now so perhaps Violet will follow suit with time). She has the most perfectly manicured (naturally) eyebrows, too. Her hair has really thinned out, and what’s coming in is lighter so it’s anybody’s guess as to how she’ll turn out. The other day when it was humid, the longer pieces started to curl at the end and I wondered – could I have hit the jackpot – 3 beauties with a hint of curl? Oh, how I always wanted curly hair (and to be strawberry blond like Molly)!! Violet is much more petite than Molly was (wears a whole size smaller at the same age) so that makes her about the same as Livy was, which is nice because it makes her easy to carry around. :)

Here are her stats from the 6-month checkup:

Height: 25 1/16 inches (25th percentile)

Weight: 14 lbs. 12 oz. (25th percentile)

And that’s why we call her Peanut! Other nicknames include Violet the Pilot, Pilot, Baby, Violeta, Sweet Pea, Piglet . . .

And she’s beautiful, breathtakingly beautiful (notice the perfectly lined eyebrow)! I’m sure you agree. :)

Funny Stuff

Olivia: “Is this a turtle neck?”

Mama: “Yes.”

Olivia (exasperated): “I don’t want to have a turtle neck. I want a girl’s neck!”

So Proud!

Today when I picked Olivia up from preschool, her teacher pulled me aside and said she had been meaning to tell me something. Immediately I started thinking of things we had missed or something embarrassing Olivia might have done. Instead, Ms. Liz said that she wanted me to know how well behaved Olivia is – all the time, she said. In fact, she added, Olivia is a model for the other children. I could barely get out the classroom door my heart was so swelled with pride!! I also made note of the fact that I assumed the worst when the teacher wanted to speak with me – a reminder to hope for the best & believe the best in people!

Last week I had a sitter for a couple hours and I was able to drop in on Livy’s school for the first time. For the hour that I was there, they were in “centers” and divided into groups of 2. Each center provided something different for the children to do for about 10 minutes. There was the art center where Ms. Liz helped them stamp pictures of leaves & flowers.

img_2550

img_2551

And the writing center where Ms. Karla helped the children trace zigzags.img_2557

img_2559

There was also a music center, a home living center (toy kitchen), an imaginative play center (little people castle) & another writing center that had magnadoodles & chalkboards.

img_2567

It was so fun to see my big girl at school. She was so attentive and sweet. I wondered if she was always so good – and turns out she is!! I’m proud of you, sweetheart!!

Outside My Window…
it is absolutely gorgeous. Now THIS is the weather I was talking about when I said March was my favorite month to live in Central Texas!! We had severe weather last week, though, and a serious hail storm did enough damage to require a new roof & body work to both vehicles. It was golf ball sized or larger hail & pretty wicked looking.

img_2545
I am thinking…
about JR and the deadlines he is under at work. I am thinking how long it has been since I was working and had deadlines. It is so easy to forget how challenging working can be. I don’t miss working, but I do miss the camaraderie of my team, the setting & accomplishing of goals, the challenge of stretching myself, and the satisfaction of a completed project. Those are all relevant to mothering to some degree, but in a very different way. Oh, and the paychecks were nice, too!
I am thankful for…
my Dad. Today is his 58th birthday and I am grateful for the wonderful man that he is and the loving, devoted father he has always been to me. Thank you for your lighthearted spirit, your fun-loving attitude, your generous & kind soul. I have been thinking about my Dad lately as I see my girls with their Daddy. I remember the special way a little girl lovingly admires her father. I remember dancing on his toes at weddings & thinking he was king of the world! I love you, Daddy!
img_1789_edited-1Happy Birthday, Grandpa Goofball!!
(If you look closely, you’ll see Livy’s face is covered in chocolate thanks to the candy cane full of M&Ms from Grandpa)
We are learning…
Violet has started eating solids. I wasn’t in any rush (and we’ve always waited until 6 months anyway), but we have some friends who had babies (baby Benett & little Roxy) more than a month after Violet was born and they were both eating cereal long before she was so we were starting to feel like we were behind! Violet had rice cereal for the first time on my birthday and was so excited to be eating like a big girl. Time to load up on all the baby veggies and get the freezer stocked with sweet potato, squash & avocado! She is also a serious scooter/crawler now and will even follow us from room to room (albeit slowly). I can’t believe our little Peanut is moving around!! I guess being petite has its advantages!
img_2129
Molly is at a really adorable age. At 19 months, she is old enough to mimic big sister and play house, but not old enough to be very naughty (that is not to say she doesn’t have a mind of her own, just that she is not trying to be ornery)! She is a very sweet little mama and loves to rock her babies, nurse her babies & put them down for naps. She is such a happy little thing and always greets Violet with a cheery “Hey, baby!!” which apparently is what I say when I get Violet from her crib. :) Molly still calls Livy “Mama” and misses her big sister whenever they are apart. She is really starting to talk a lot (though JR & I are the only who knows what she’s saying). Yesterday, she dumped her cookies out of the bag and I asked her to put them back. “No, Mama,” she said, “I want cookies in bag.” Yikes!
img_2171
Olivia was the special child at school today. The themes were green & square so she took green jell-o jigglers and her shamrock pillowcase from Grandma Andrews for show & tell. She also wore a Jolly Green Giant t-shirt from Grandma Kane to be sure to look festive. I am just amazed at how grown-up she is already. There is nothing she enjoys more than helping Mom & Dad so she regularly empties the silverware from the dishwasher, sets the table, “makes” salads (by putting the spinach in bowls), picks up toys, & helps her sisters. I am really proud of her devotion to the little girls.
img_2543_edited-1
This is a picture of Olivia wearing the dress I wore for my Aunt Teri’s wedding (oh, about 28 years ago!). My sister, Rachel, was the flower girl & had this dress in purple. All my little girl cousins & I got to have a matching dress in a different color! I doubt my Mom has time to scan the picture of all of us cousins from the wedding & email it to me for posting (she’s a tax preparer, so this is obviously a hectic time), but if Grandma or one of the aunts can do it, I’d love to show how Liv compares to the previous generation!! Oh, and I don’t know why she’s giving such a tortured look. She was having fun trying on dresses, I swear!
From the kitchen…
there is not a lot exciting going on these days. JR is working long hours this week so I am taking advantage and not doing much for dinners. Last night, the girls & I had grilled hot dogs & pasta salad! :)
I am wearing…
black slacks, a turquoise t-shirt & flip flops. I’ve thought about stretching myself & trying another type of footwear but change is hard & summer is HOT!!
I am creating…
what I can. I hit some more hiccups in my plans for Violet’s announcements and have accepted that they will get out soon, but not on my original time line (or the 1st alternate or 2nd alternate or 3rd alternate . . . .). I’m conflicted about it, but I’m trying to find the balance between setting goals/deadlines & realizing that life happens and doing what I can when I can. Sometimes arbitrary deadlines aren’t helpful, but if there is never a due date, it can be over 6 months before a birth announcement goes out!
I am getting pretty good at …
getting in the 5 basic things I must do to be a healthy person in order that I might serve my family better – pray, shower, eat, exercise, & sleep. In fact, I started a 5k training program last Saturday and have 12 weeks to be race ready for a 5K. This will technically be my second 5k, but since I erased the first one from my memory (yes, it was that bad), this is officially my first running endeavor. I’m excited to have a date on the calendar and something to work toward. I’ll admit I’ve been inspired by JR’s commitment to his marathon training (he’s doing the FULL Lincoln Marathon on May 3rd). Two of my brothers are natural runners and were quite competitive in Cross Country in their day (Nathan even ran in college). I also have an aunt who runs everyday, so there is something in my genes that says I could be a runner . . . we shall see!
I am reading…
I think it’s time to be honest in this section. So far, I’ve been putting the title of a book that’s on my nightstand thinking that I will pick it up and read it in the week ahead. So far that has not happened. So honestly, I am not reading anything except stories with my little ones. The ironic thing is that I love collecting books and my house is full of books I’ve yet to read!
I am hoping…
that my friend Tanya’s daughter, Ana, will have a miraculous healing from her cancer. I am hoping that God will not call her to Himself just yet. I am hoping & praying that God will give her the opportunity to have a long & happy life. I am praying for a miracle. Please join me.
I am hearing…
Jack Johnson on Pandora – decided to shake things up a bit!
Around the house…
I am working on creating daily & weekly routines. I have pretty much been operating in crisis mode & putting out fires for the last year and I am ready to have a more peaceful flow to things. I know that having regular routines will make life easier on me & the girls so we are starting to play with our schedule (or lack there of) to figure out what fits and what I can do when. There are a lot of suggestions out there and it’s a matter of finding what fits with our lifestyle. I’m also trying to build up to something respectable by starting step by step. One example I liked is as follows (this is my Step 1 starting today):
DEW Each Morning:
Dishes (empty dishwasher & wash dishes by hand)
Eat (plan meals for the day)
Wash (get the laundry going)
3 Ss each Evening:
Set the dishwasher to run overnight.
Set out stuff for tomorrow.
Straighten up.

One of my favorite things…

my husband. I don’t tell him enough, or reflect on it enough, but I simply adore this man! Here are my top 5 favorite things about the man I married:

  • dependable provider – he excels at his current job and meets all of our needs, but I know if circumstances were to change, he would do ANYTHING he had to to take care of us
  • impressive athlete – this marathon training is incredible. Last Monday he ran 16 miles BEFORE going to work!
  • handsome devil – he’s always been a looker, but the marathon training is definitely noticeable!!
  • handiest handy man you could ever hope for
  • devoted Daddy – there are not words to describe what it means to see the love he has for his girls and the joy he finds in being with them.

img_2116_edited-2Daddy & the “big” girls watching a show about tiny, but deadly jellyfish (they find the most bizarre shows to watch).

A Few Plans For The Rest Of The Week:
Today I’ll call my Dad & cousin Holley who celebrate birthdays today – Happy Birthday!! Livy has preschool today & Thursday and it’s a big week because she gets to take snack & bring show & tell. Tomorrow a friend is dropping by with her 2 year-old Sara Beth so that we can get acquainted better in case we are called on to keep Sara Beth while her new baby brother or sister is born next weekend! I have my group session with my personal trainer Wednesday evening & 5K training Saturday morning. Might attend the strength class at NI on Friday morning (it’s at 6:15am, and believe it or not, I did make it there on my birthday last Friday!). I’m looking forward to meeting with Madonninas Mothers (my mommy prayer group) on Thursday morning. Sunday is my Mom’s birthday so hopefully, we can do a videochat with the birthday grandparents this week!!
Here is a picture thought I am sharing…
Decided to add pictures throughout this time so you’ve already seen everything! Hopefully, we can get the on-line photo album updated soon – we are seriously behind now . . .

TIR: The Prologue

canonI know all of you were worried about me, so I wanted to let you know that I survived the Texas Independence Relay. Let’s start with the basics. Yes, we finished all 203 .2 miles, but you’ll have to wait to find out how we did. I ran 4 legs totaling 20.5 miles. Btw, 20.5 in a day is a new distance record for me. Since it was a relay I think it is fitting that I write up the experience in a series of posts. OK, and it would be a really long post that I might not ever finish if I tried to do it all at once (notice how long it took me to get just this part out).

A team of 10 people in two vans involves some logistical challenges. Luckily, our team captain, Chris, had run it last year and was all over it and, of course, it was powered by LabVIEW.  Race day came and we loaded up our two vans Saturday morning and headed down to Gonzales. The beginning of the race was kind of anti-climatic. Since there were a wide variety of teams running at different speeds, some teams started as early as 6 AM while we started at about 1 PM. So every once in a while they would fire the canon and a team would take off running. The canon was a replica of the famed “Come and Take It” canon, which was actually quite small. To top it off, when it was our turn to start we didn’t even get the canon. They told our team captain to hit a gong. Then we stood around looking at each other. The wind blew the gong over as we tried to figure out if we had officially “started” and then a photographer told us to run. So we did.

The race started with a 1.1 mile “prologue” which the entire team runs together. Trying to not look too much like the weak link, I kept up with their 7 minute mile pace alright. It was enough to get the heart rate up and a little sweat going, just so that I could jump in the rest van. We left the active van of five people with the runner and the four of us drove ahead four legs where we were supposed to rest. That took us to Shiner, Texas and the transition point was next to the high school track. Laying beside the track on a blanket with a towel over my head reminded me of my high school track days.  Which for the record, my event was the 200 meters, not 200 miles. I was able to rest, but I could tell that getting any sleep over the course of this race was going to be tough.

Coming soon… TIR: Leg 1

St. Patrick’s Day 2009 (with a flashback to 2008)

St. Patrick

A traditional Irish prayer:

May the road rise to meet you.
May the wind be always at your back.
May the sun shine warm upon your face.
And rains fall soft upon your fields.
And until we meet again,
May God hold you in the hollow of His hand.

Read more on the life of St. Patrick.

A traditional Irish saying (you gotta love Irish humor):

May those who love us love us.
And those that don’t love us,
May God turn their hearts.
And if He doesn’t turn their hearts,
May he turn their ankles,
So we’ll know them by their limping.

Check out The History Channel for a very nice tribute to St. Patrick’s Day.

The girls have Irish on both sides making them more Irish than their parents! Last year we had a very festive St. Patrick’s Day in San Antonio where they dyed the river green and held a riverboat parade!

And the “big” girls look so little in the pictures!

img_0506

It was a very special St. Patrick’s Day because we got to celebrate with the IowAndrews!!

img_0500_edited-1

This year, we had a very simple celebration of St. Patrick’s Day, but we did manage to dye our milk green at breakfast . . .

img_2075

And lounge around with our homemade St. Patrick’s Day pillowcases from Grandma Andrews . . .

All the while listening to The Irish Tenors & Celtic Woman on Pandora,

but Grandma & Grandpa Kane were listening to The Irish Tenors LIVE!

Hope you had a very Happy St. Patrikck’s Day!

Outside My Window…
it is sunny, & warm again! Last week we had a cold snap in the 40s and I was a little bitter that my favorite weather month had started out too warm (high 80s for a week) and then too cold (in the 40s the next week). I guess I sound a bit like Goldilocks, don’t I? I think this week will be quite pleasant, though, with the forecast sunny most days and 75-80 all week. The perfect weather for eating out on the patio (too bad I don’t have one . . . yet!).
I am thinking…
about the last year and what a blur it is. A year ago this month, Livy had just turned two, Molly was seven months old, and I was starting my second trimester with Violet. Then we caught a horrible, terrible, no good, very bad flu bug and I never really recovered . . . well maybe not never, but it was a long, long time. Stay tuned for the rest of the story in a separate blog post!
I am thankful for…
good health, the ability to exercise & the abundance of healthy food at my disposal.
We are learning…
So much for Violet sleeping through the night! Let’s just say we’ve hit a bump in that road, but on a positive note, she IS learning to scoot & crawl! Last night she took two “steps” forward (on hands & knees) to get to a book. Seems she is most motivated by paper & books, not so much toys. Grandma Andrews says JR was the same way and loved newspaper, especially. We’ll have to see what we can do there, we don’t get the paper! As a comparison, the older girls didn’t crawl until the more typical age of 9 months, so Violet crawling at 6 months is quite the accomplishment!
Molly’s language development is really blossoming. She’s stringing three words into sentences quite easily these days. Here is what we hear most often:
“I did it!”
“Give it back!”
“I want milk (or more or apple or whatever is the object of her desire).”
“Baby night night (referring either to Violet or her baby dolls).”
She is also known to shout one word commands like “Out!”; “Eat!”; and “Mine!”
Olivia continues to amaze me with her understanding of the world and interest in all things grown-up. She is really in to painting & coloring lately and has started actually drawing faces (this is the first that her artwork is not just scribbles!). And she has started finding “O for Olivia” everywhere – on signs, in menus, and in her books!
From the kitchen…
Our fancy roasted chicken turned out yummy, but we think our rotisserie chickens off the grill are probably comparable. This week I put a lot of regular favorites on the meal calendar – grilled chicken breasts, teriyaki sirloin kabobs, hamburger gravy over mashed potatoes, & grilled pork steaks. We’ll probably go to the parish fish fry this Friday night because a lot of friends will be there (though JR will likely eat a PB&J before we go as he doesn’t eat fish!). And since we haven’t had one in awhile, a roast for Sunday dinner. :)
Oh, and I got a Cooking Light 5 Ingredient 15 Minute Cookbook from Amazon and plan to use it primarily for healthy lunches for the girls & I.
I am wearing…
a blue t-shirt, khaki shorts & flip flops.
I am creating…
labels for Violet’s announcements. We had a hiccup in the design as Costco changed the dimensions of their announcement card so it had to be laid out again and that was delayed due to JR’s race. At any rate, we are moving full speed ahead for mailing soon!! And finally, I will be able to talk about something else in this space!
I am (still) going…
to focus on the 5 basic things I must do to be a healthy person in order that I might serve my family better – pray, shower, eat, exercise, & sleep.
I am really focusing on exercise the last couple weeks since starting a training program through NI’s gym. You’ll be pleased to know that daily exercise has required daily showering as well! I meet for a group session with a personal trainer on Wednesday afternoons and will be getting up early to workout on Mondays & Fridays and then add something during Livy’s preschool on Tuesdays & Thursdays. It has been quite a hurdle to get in five opportunities for exercise each week! But everyone keeps telling me that once it is part of your routine it will be so much easier!
I am reading…
still trying to get through the Montessori book. For a lighter read, I picked up Amazing Grace for Mothers the other night when I couldn’t get to sleep. It’s similar to the Chicken Soup for the Soul books. Unfortunately, the little story I read was about a mother who lost a child to SIDS at four months. Needless to say, it didn’t help me fall asleep!!!!
I am hoping…
the dermatologist we see tomorrow will have a quick, easy fix for Olivia’s rash that just won’t go away!
I am hearing…
the Olivia show. After painting a few pictures, Liv is watching a TV treat while the babies take a nap! It’s not the best show on TV, but Livy really gets a kick out of the fact that the star is “Olivia!” The theme song is really cute, too! Of course, she chose “Olivia paints” from the episodes we have on the DVR. We’re planning to cancel the cable this month – I’ll really miss the DVR :( but we expect to be watching less TV and that is a good thing.
Around the house…
stuff is everywhere! We had a full & fun weekend and that leaves a lot of clean up this morning. Saturday we put a good faith effort into finishing the clean up of the office to decorate Violet’s room. We made a lot of progress, but didn’t quite get to the painting. Sunday we went to Macy’s after Mass and took advantage of all the girls falling asleep in the van for me to do some shopping for a dress for an upcoming wedding. When the girls woke up we grabbed some lunch and then headed back to Macy’s for Easter dresses for the girls & some casual clothes for me! :)
One of my favorite things…
out-of-town visitors. For various reasons, no one is planning to visit us this year. :( After a record number of visitors last year it is a bummer to not have that to look forward to this year. It is especially sweet to have family come visit because when we are home for the holidays it is really hard (okay impossible) to get enough quality time in with everyone we want to. When they come to us we can devote all our time & attention to spending quality time together!
A Few Plans For The Rest Of The Week:
This is Spring Break week so Livy is off from preschool. We have nothing planned today. Tomorrow I’ll take Liv (and the babies will come along) to the dermatologist and try to do something festive for St. Patrick’s Day (including lounging & napping with our new St. Patrick’s Day pillowcases from Grandma Andrews – thank you!). Wednesday I meet with my trainer, and Thursday I have my rosary group (Madonninas Mothers). Friday we are supposed to host the bilingual playgroup. I’m thinking we might try to meet at a park, weather permitting. Friday night is a send off at the parish fish fry for our friend who is entering a contemplative order of sisters. Saturday our friends are keeping the big girls while JR, Violet & I got to a wedding (the daughter of a friend of JR’s from work). I’m looking forward to a nice evening out in the country (the wedding & reception will be on the family’s acreage). :)
Here is a picture thought I am sharing…

7 Quick Takes (take 7)

For those who would like a glimpse into the mind of a mother with three girls – 3 & under, I share this story. I got an email from my aunt this morning wishing me a Happy Birthday – I thought excitedly, it’s my birthday? I smiled. Slowly, the questions started forming, but I wasn’t convinced it was not my birthday until I looked at the calendar and saw that there are still 2 weeks to go. The good news is that y’all still have plenty of shopping days left. :)

This week I learned that dentists (okay, just one dentist) are like car salesmen. I chipped my front tooth biting a fork (not my best moment) and asked my dentist if there was anything he could do about it. At first, he said it was best to leave it alone, but on my next visit he suggested we put some bonding on it. I decided to go ahead and do it when I got a filling on Monday since I would have already met the deductible. After supper on Tuesday night I looked in the mirror and the bonding was gone! So today I went back to the dentist to discuss things. He wasn’t surprised at all that the blasted thing didn’t last 24 hrs. His response was, “I said no guarantees. It’s a high stress area.” Nice. I told him that under no circumstance did I think I was signing up for something that wouldn’t last a day. Based on what he said, I understood that it wouldn’t last forever, but I was expecting a few years. He actually laughed when I said that and said that he knew it was only going to last a few weeks or months! In fact, he said that the first time I bit into something it would fall out! Needless to say, we had a MAJOR communication breakdown!! The good news is that besides the money I’m out (which is not a terrible amount considering what my insurance covered), I’m actually back where I started. I came home frustrated and related it all to JR and complained that my “medical professional” didn’t do what was best for me – that he was just looking for a way to make money. JR’s response, “You never noticed his Viper in the parking lot advertising Invisalign?” Wouldn’t you know it, he did say that my only alternative at this point would be to use Invisalign to pull the tooth down so that it could be sanded off (that or buy two porcelein verneers – either of which would run me $3000 smackeroos)!

Sometimes reading blogs is really uplifting and sometimes it makes me freak out for my inadequacy. Lately, a lot of women are writing about their Spring Cleaning plans. I am still trying to get my head above water and balance life with the three girls so it seems like I should get a pass on Spring Cleaning this year (not that I’ve ever done as extensive a job as some of the lists I’ve seen lately). The trouble is that my house could really use a good scrubbing. It’s been so neglected in the last year. Maybe I’ll save my birthday money and hire a housecleaner! I got that for a gift before Molly was born from some of my dear friends and that was the best gift ever!!

So yesterday I took the babies shopping while Liv was at school. It actually went rather well, all things considering. And we stopped for a snack at The Kolache Factory. Yum! While we were sitting enjoying our treats, a group of students (I would guess nursing school or pharmacy school) came in and were having a snack of their own. They proceeded to have a very interesting conversation and I’ll be honest, I listened to the whole thing. Hey, we were in this little kolache shop and I was just standing there eating a kolache with nothing to do but listen. Here are some snippets:

One girl says to another, “Hey, I heard you talking about having a baby with him – you need to check yourself.” (that was what first thing to get my attention, but I didn’t hear the response)

Later, the girl who needed to check herself said of the recent octuplets, “I’d never have 8 babies – I’d do that reduction thing.”

And to my surprise, the first girl said, “You’d systematically whack some of them?”

The first girl then told a story about having worked in a pediatric unit and taking special care of one baby in particular. “He really loved me and only quit crying for me,” she said. “Then he pooped on my arm.”

At that point they started talking about an upcoming exam. There were to be questions about cancer, but not the drugs to treat cancer. Somehow they started talking about people who use drugs. The first girl said “smoking crack should make you infertile. I think I am infertile, or maybe my boyfriend is.”

The girl who hadn’t said anything yet said, “I wish I was infertile.”

The first girl said, “My friend wonders why people on crack can have babies and she can’t. She’s had four miscarriages.”

The girl who was supposed to ‘check herself’ for wanting a baby said,”I’d want a boy and I’d probably get girls. Girls run in my family. My grandmother had 5 children – all girls! My dad had 3 girls. My sister has a girl. I just want a boy.”

As we were leaving, the first girl said of Molly, “Oh, my gosh, what a cute baby – what’s her name? Isn’t she cute?” I’m not sure they noticed Violet was also in the double stroller.

I really couldn’t stop listening. It was fascinating to hear this group of people (probably about my age but not at all in the same space of life) talk about the things that have been the focus of my life in recent years – fertility, babies, and girls, especially. So strange to hear it all rejected in one sense, but still a desire for all of it was there.

I actually worked out on my elliptical today – woo hoo! The first week of my new fitness regimen, I was able to workout during overlaping naps every other day. Then last week I did not get a day with overlapping naps so after a week of no exercise except my training session I was trying to come to terms with the fact that I’d have to get up at the crack of dawn if I was going to exercise (and let me tell you that for a mother who hasn’t slept through the night in many, many moons, that is not an attractive option). Anyway, today I was able to work out during Molly’s nap. I had to put a movie on for Liv and get off the machine a few times to help Violet do something different, but it did work okay. And a disrupted workout is better than no workout at all. Anyway, I’m hoping that working out will become a regular part of my daily routine and will try to be flexible & creative in order to make that happen. JR helped me brainstorm and we came up with some really good options (including pushing the little two in the double jogger while Liv is at school, doing a class at the NI gym after work, and childproofing the garage so that the little ones can hang out with me for 30 min on the elliptical). How about y’all – what has worked for you? I’m really hoping to be more active for the long haul, not just to lose the baby weight, so I’m hoping to get into some really good habits here.

In today’s 7 Quick Takes, Jennifer talks about Meetup.com as a potential for forming playgroups, finding an exercise buddy, etc. I looked around to see what they have in Austin. Surprisingly, I didn’t find a group for baby bunching, Catholic at-home mothers with mild to severe amnesia who enjoy discussing politics & religion. I was, however, intrigued by The North Austin Baby Hikers. We might have to check them out sometime.

Tonight we watched our friends‘ two girls so they could go out to dinner. They are returning the favor in a couple weeks when we leave our big girls with them and go to a wedding. For three hours, we had 5 girls in the house – and Livy was the oldest (at 3)!! It actually went rather well and I was impressed that adding a couple more to the mix really didn’t change things all that much. I do think I will be more sympathetic toward mothers of twins, though (their youngest is 4 months & Violet is 6 months so it was pretty much like twins) because when both babies were hungry, things got a little tense! But all that was quickly forgotten when they showed up with cheesecake when they came for the girls! Yum!

Hope you enjoyed my 7 Quick Takes – be sure to visit Jennifer at Conversion Diary for links to more 7 Quick Takes Friday!

Have a wonderful weekend!!
