I also bike on the street frequently, bicycle that is, and would put that in a similar category. I also haven't done extensive research on accident statistics. But I'd be more comfortable riding on a divided highway like the interstate, than a residential street. Regardless, you have to be a defensive driver and assume that people don't see you. From what I do know, obviously alcohol is the biggest risk. Other key safety factors are speeding, not wearing a helmet, and driving at night. I've been meaning to write a post on the topic of getting a motorcycle but haven't gotten to it yet. The main obstacle right now is cost. I've got the license and have ridden previously.
