Out of Harm’s Way

This morning we awoke to the most joyful news that my brother, 1LT Nathan Kane, is on his way home!! After a long year’s deployment in Iraq, Nathan has arrived safely in Kuwait to begin his journey home. Obviously, we are all thrilled to get the news and eagerly await his arrival in Nebraska. Though JR, Olivia, Baby & I cannot join the welcome home celebrations, we are cheering from here!

Thank you for your service to our country, Nathan. Thank you for enduring a year away from your husband and father, Trish & Morgan. Thank you to all of you who remembered Nathan in thought & prayer - we are truly blessed. Please remember the soldiers who are still deployed, still in harms way, and far from their loved ones. That world leaders would find a way to lasting peace and all the soldiers would return home safely.

Happy Birthday, 1LT Nathan Kane!!

Please join me in wishing my brother, Nathan, a very happy birthday today. He is serving our country with the 734th Transportation Battalion in Iraq and has almost completed his tour of duty. I’m sure it’s difficult to spend a special day like your birthday in a most un-ideal setting far from your family and friends so I thought he’d enjoy hearing from some of them. Please add a comment and let’s show him how much we’re all thinking of him today!

Lord, please bless the troops, bring Nathan home safely, and provide lasting peace to the people of Iraq. And bless Nathan, especially on his birthday, with the knowledge that he has made us proud, that we love him and we miss him.

Your turn!

Happy Birthday, JR!!

For all the loving things you do…
For all the dreams you’ve made come true…
For sharing life, for being you…
We love you very much.

Happy Birthday!!

Love, Olivia, Baby & Mama

A Belated Welcome to Baby Addison Michelle!

So it just occurred to me how terribly neglectful I’ve been of my newest neice, Addison Michelle Tesmer. Here is a belated introduction to the newest member of the Kane family. Addison is the beautiful daughter of my sister, Rachel, and her husband, Adam. She was born on April 16th at 9:43am and was 6 lbs. 10 oz. and 19.75 inches long. As a wonderful surprise, we were blessed to meet her just hours after she was born! Addison wasn’t due for a week and a half, but I had been praying that she would come just a little early so that we would get to spend some time with her while we were in Nebraska and that’s just what we did! She is a real doll and pleasant as can be. Olivia liked looking at her and wanted to point out her eyes, nose & mouth. We’re going to have to work on being especially gentle with new babies before Olivia’s little sister gets here, but at least she liked the baby. Adam is working on a website for the Tesmer family, so we’ll update you when that is available. In the mean time, you can check our Photo Gallery for a few pictures of Olivia’s newest cousin.

Two Peas in a Pod?

This is our 25th week, so as you see on the countdown, we have just over 100 days before the delivery of our "new baby"!! We had another ultrasound this morning to look at her sweet little face and reassure ourselves that she is indeed a girl (technically it was done to rule out any abnormalities in the facial features such as a cleft palate since we couldn’t get a good view of her face last time). She didn’t disappoint! She showed us her beautiful, healthy profile straight away and then we watched as she rubbed her eyes, yawned and then stuck her tongue out at her big sister! It was very exciting to see her so active. We forget that she is doing all the things now that we will get to watch full-time when she is born. What a miracle life is – what a beautiful thing to watch - what a gift. Some families like to wait until their baby is born to learn whether they are adding a little girl or boy to the mix, and we see the excitement in doing so. But for us, we want to know as much as possible about our little ones. We have learned the hard way that time is not always in our favor and what better way to bond with the baby and enjoy each day of pregnancy than to know her identity and ponder her name and dream about her future. Sisters!! We are thrilled with the news – for us and for them. JR thought it would be fun to see how similar the girls’ profiles are – what do you think – two peas in a pod?

Thumbs Up!

This past Friday we had another chance to check in on our new addition with an ultrasound. It is pretty amazing to see the technology in action. They measure all kinds of things and can even check on the parts of the brain, the chambers of the heart, internal organs like the kidneys, blood flow in the cord, and sometimes when the baby cooperates the ‘private parts’. Well this baby was a little shy so we aren’t 100% sure, but the best guess is that it is a girl! She was also hiding her face so we will have another ultrasound in about 4 weeks and might get a better look. We’re just ecstatic that the baby is healthy. It is easy to take for granted that things will turn out perfectly and how much of a miracle life really is, so say a prayer for a family somewhere that isn’t as fortunate. Despite being a little shy, our little one seemed to be in pretty good spirits and even gave us a thumbs up.

Our Baby is Growing Up!

For the first year of Olivia’s life everyone said, "Soak it in. It goes so fast!" But that first year for me seemed to go just right – not too fast and not too slow. I was home with her all the time and she was learning and growing a little everyday. Since her first birthday, however, it is going a little fast. She has gone from our sweet baby to an adorable little girl. So many changes in the past few months – she walks, she talks, she whines, she laughs so hard she falls over. It’s amazing! Don’t get me wrong, I’m thoroughly enjoying this new phase, but it’s setting in that our baby is growing up and life will never be the same. As always, Olivia is a very pleasant, sweet girl. Her best bud is still Red and she gives her lots of hugs, rides her like a bull (even holds onto Red’s collar for support), and wrestles her like a UFC champion. Red is as wonderful to Olivia as you could hope. She tolerates anything and everything and only occasionally gets up and walks away. Not surprisingly, Red has inspired Livy’s favorite word – woof! She’s got the whole word together now (started with just "ff") and everywhere we go, it’s "woof, woof, woof" to everyone’s delight. She can also say: baby, bye, daddy, dog, eye, hi, light, look, mama, more, no, nose, quack, thank you, and up. We haven’t done much with signs the last few weeks as she doesn’t show much interest and seems to be communicating well with gesturing and words. We’ll have to see if we need it. Her favorite snacks are fresh fruit (especially pears), cheese, Ritz crackers, and fruit smoothies. She loves anything you can drink out of a straw, especially juice boxes.

Just like her father, she is happiest outdoors and whenever she hears someone grab some keys or sees a jacket in my hand, she runs to the front door and starts laughing. She’d give anything to spend all day running around outside and since the weather has been beautiful the last couple weeks (70s and 80s), we’ve done a lot of that. The first thing she does when she gets out the door and down the front step is run to the sidewalk and take off toward the mailboxes (at the end of the block and around the corner). I really have to watch her because she is faster than I think and if I dilly-dally at all, she’s about to round the corner. We’re going to hang a swing for her in the backyard and redo the fence so that it is a more child-friendly playground. No plans for a swing set for this summer, but we will get a wading pool to help us survive the Texas heat. Her favorite indoor toys these days are stuffed animals. She has her special bunny that she sleeps with and any other little animal that is about the same size is an instant friend and she’ll tuck it up under her chin and pat it like a baby. We’ve also joined a toy library (like a regular library that also loans out educational toys) and that’s been a fun way for us to get out and meet other families, as well as try out a few toys and see how much fun they are. This week we have magnetic blocks and those are really interesting. We also got a ride-on toy that she is warming up to. It was a little scary at first, but she’s starting to see how fun it can be. Our neighbors, Rick & Jennifer, kindly gave us their daughter Cecilia’s old one last weekend and it fits her a little better, so I’m sure we’ll be having hours of fun with that this summer.

I’ve started letting her watch her first regular TV program – It’s a Big, Big World on PBS. I turn it on after breakfast and it gives me 30 minutes to organize my day and have some quiet time for prayer (my Lenten resolution). It’s a nice educational show about science, animals and nature and she really enjoys watching it. There is a super cute photo of her watching it with her bunny here. Much to our delight, Olivia has become a bit more cuddly in the past couple months and we are thoroughly enjoying more snuggles from her. She is still an independent girl, but seems to appreciate little signs that we are supporting her in her latest adventures and wants to give and receive hugs more. I’m surprised on a daily basis by what she understands. She can do just about anything you tell her to like "get your shoes or go to your high chair." She knows what direction to run for just about any activity. She’s also learning how to be ornery and has decided that sometimes it’s more fun not to come when you ask and not to give you what she has when she’s been told to. Along those lines, one of her favorite pastimes is still taking books, CDs, etc. off every bookshelf in the house. The good thing is that she is starting to show some interest in putting things back! Books can be tricky to re-shelve, but she can open the drawers on her new dresser and take out socks (and everything else) and put them back all by herself. The thing she loves most of all, though, is reading. She is a little bookworm and I catch her more often than not, sitting in a little corner in her room taking out her board books one by one and reading to herself in a sweet little cadence. Every time I’ve tried to catch her on video, though, she looks up and gets distracted.

It’s a good thing we have a new baby on the way because this one is really growing up fast!

A Little Something Special

For those of you who like to plan ahead, we wanted to let you know that 210 days from today we expect to announce a little something special - the name of our new baby! Yep! Olivia is going to be a big sister around August 15, 2007. That makes us 10 weeks pregnant (and for those doing the math, that makes the kids 20 months apart). We’ve had two chances to see the new baby on camera already. Once on Dec. 15th to verify s/he was in the right place and again on Jan. 5th to see the heartbeat! It was such a relief to pass those two milestones and we thank God for the opportunity to experience the joy of pregnancy again. I’ve been feeling pretty good, although I’ve had to stock up on Saltines & 7-Up this time around and add an every-other-day nap to my schedule. We plan to find out if Olivia’s getting a little brother or sister when the time comes (at 20 weeks – in late March), so we’ll let you know that and keep you updated on any other developments.

For your reading pleasure, here’s a little more on Baby’s development – there’s always so much to report on in these early weeks:

"Though she’s barely the size of a kumquat – just an inch or so long, crown to bottom – and weighs less than a quarter of an ounce, she has completed the most critical portion of her development. This is the beginning of the so-called fetal period, a time when the tissues and organs in her body grow and mature rapidly. During the next three weeks, your baby’s length will more than double to nearly 3 inches. Each day, more minute details – including tiny fingernails, toenails, and peach-fuzz hair – start to appear on her body."

Livy’s Latest

It’s been awhile since we updated Olivia’s fans on her latest accomplishments, so here goes. She’s a walker now! She started taking a few steps just after her birthday and while we were in Nebraska, she really took off. It is now her chosen method of mobility, and she shows no signs of slowing down. With great delight, she has learned that walking upright frees her hands to unroll reams of toilet paper, knock glasses off coffee tables, and empty our bedside drawers. And just to prove she has been listening to her mother, she’ll say "no, no, no" all the while! Yesterday she did her most destructive thing yet. She chewed on the side rail of the crib and left about a dozen little teeth scratches! Even though she’s developed a few bad toddler habits – including whining and throwing little fits, she’s still very charming and this is all a part of growing up and learning how the world works, right?

She is still best buddies with Red and says "dog" and pets her really sweetly. She also started giving hugs by laying her head on the person (or dog) who needs one. She doesn’t really do kisses yet, but the hugs are pretty cute. If you ask Olivia what the dog says, she’ll say "ff" for woof, and we’re working on "Meow." She’s not very interested in her signs lately, though she recognizes what she sees. She’s gotten good at Peek-a-Boo and will cover her face (except for her eyes) when she’s hiding. Aunt Lisa started that over the webcam – pretty cool what she can understand using all that technology. She can also point to eyes and noses when asked, but doesn’t really seem to understand possession yet (her nose as opposed to Daddy’s). Right now she’s pushing the button on one of her many musical Christmas toys and "dancing" while it plays (she throws her hands up in the air and twists at the waist)! She’s really growing up quickly in the last couple months and fancies herself quite the big girl!
